President Trump expressed on Tuesday his desire to replace Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell “right now,” although he mentioned feeling restrained by others. He criticized Powell’s handling of interest rates and indicated an eagerness to remove him immediately.
“I want to get the person that’s in there right out, but people are holding me back,” Trump stated before a meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at the White House.
Trump described Powell as “an idiot” despite having nominated him for the position in 2017. Powell’s term as chairman is set to conclude in May, with expectations that Trump will announce a nominee by the year’s end.
Federal laws safeguard Fed directors like Powell from dismissal without valid “cause,” which courts typically interpret as instances of significant misconduct rather than mere disagreements or personal conflicts, something Trump has had with Powell.
Experts have cautioned that trying to remove Powell could lead to market instability, given the critical role the U.S. and the Fed play in the global financial landscape.
Throughout his presidency, Trump has made numerous threats to fire Powell. He noted on Tuesday that he might have a decision in mind, mentioning Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent as a potential successor. However, Trump commented, “I liked him, but I’m not going to run him for the job. He refused.”
Bessent acknowledged he prefers to remain in the Treasury Department and indicated he would be talking to finalists for the Fed position in the upcoming weeks.
Reportedly, the finalists are narrowed down to five candidates: Michelle Bowman, Fed Vice Chair for Supervision; Christopher Waller, Federal Reserve Board Member; Kevin Warsh, former Federal Reserve Director; Kevin Hassett, Director of the White House National Economic Council; and Rick Ryder, BlackRock Chief Fixed Income Investment Officer.
Trump mentioned, “We have some surprising names and we have some standard names that people are talking about. It’s good to be politically correct every once in a while, but we have some great names.”
