Texas Governor Labels CAIR as Foreign Terrorist Organization

On Tuesday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott officially designated the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a Muslim advocacy group that has cooperated with the Biden administration, as a “foreign terrorist” group, alongside the Muslim Brotherhood.

In his designation, Abbott also classified both organizations as “transnational criminal organizations.” This move paves the way for stricter enforcement against these groups and prevents them from purchasing land in Texas. The governor made this announcement as part of a broader statement about the perceived threats these organizations pose.

Abbott elaborated, stating, “The Muslim Brotherhood and CAIR have made their intentions clear—the imposition of Sharia law and the establishment of Islamic world dominance.” He described their actions in support of terrorism and undermining state laws as intolerable. “These extremists,” he added, “are not welcome in our state and currently cannot acquire property rights in Texas.”

In response to Abbott’s declaration, CAIR issued a statement highlighting its role as a civil rights organization committed to defending free speech and promoting justice. The group expressed its condemnation of various forms of violence, including terrorism, asserting that they have repeatedly denounced acts of terror. They suggested that Abbott’s claims are rooted in misinformation and accused him of fostering anti-Muslim sentiment rather than serving the people of Texas.

Previously, reports indicated that the Department of Justice was looking into CAIR’s eligibility for taxpayer funding due to its past ties to Hamas. CAIR describes itself as “a leading champion of justice and mutual understanding” and aims to protect civil rights while fostering a greater understanding of Islam.

Under the previous Biden administration, CAIR had been involved in initiatives aimed at combating anti-Semitism. However, relations deteriorated following statements from a CAIR official expressing approval of Hamas attacks on Israel.

Some lawmakers, like Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik, have called for further investigations into CAIR’s funding sources, suspecting connections to terrorist organizations. The Muslim Brotherhood, which was founded in Egypt in 1928, is acknowledged as one of the oldest modern Islamist movements in the world.
