New Jersey’s Democratic Primary Field Grows as Mikie Sherrill Prepares to Resign

As Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill (D.N.J.) gets ready to step down, the field for the Democratic primary is rapidly filling up. Almost a dozen hopefuls are entering the race, ranging from moderate establishment figures to those leaning further left.

Sherrill, who has represented New Jersey’s 11th District in the House, won her gubernatorial seat during a significant Democratic surge on Election Day, reflecting trends seen in other blue states.

Her resignation will trigger a special election for her House seat, though no election date has been set thus far. Among the candidates showing interest are former Obama administration aide Cammy Croft, ex-Congressman Tom Malinowski, and former campaign manager Brendan Gill, who has the endorsement of Governor Murphy.

Shortly after Sherrill’s victory, Croft urged Governor Murphy to expedite the scheduling of this special election. “In these extraordinary times, New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District deserves representation in Washington without prolonged uncertainty,” she stated. “Residents need a voice that will advocate for better food, energy, and healthcare costs, standing against the Trump administration’s overwhelming and corrupt influence.”

FEC filings indicate that Croft has around $176,000 in campaign funds, while candidate Jeff Glazell has exceeded $310,000. Glazell expressed his commitment, stating, “I’m all in for this race. If Mikie wins, my intention is to run. The timeline is tight for an early 2026 special election, and serious planning is essential.”

Former Congressman Tom Malinowski has been notably active online, announcing his candidacy despite not living in the district currently. He has pledged to relocate there if he secures the special election. His candidacy has also received a nod from Senator Andy Kim, who endorsed him via social media, emphasizing the need for courage in today’s politics.

Malinowski lost his previous seat due to redistricting, which made areas of New Jersey’s 11th District part of his old district.

He recently asked for Sherrill’s support through a campaign video, indicating he intends to continue where she left off.

Meanwhile, Brendan Gill enjoys substantial backing from over 60 local Democrats. In his campaign video, he articulated his motivations, saying, “I’m running to counter the chaos caused by a president empowered by Congress and Wall Street supporters.”

John Bartlett is another name in the mix, reportedly possessing a well-stocked campaign fund from a past House bid. Other candidates include Anna Lee Williams, Justin Strickland, and Mark Chaban, with Republican contender Joe Hathaway being the only one from the opposing party in the running.

Sherrill announced via social media on November 12 that she would be resigning to serve as New Jersey’s 57th Governor. She urged her colleagues to avoid being complicit in depriving families of essential services, calling for resilience in the face of challenges.

In the previous election, Sherrill secured her seat with a resounding 56.34% of the votes, marking a strong Democratic hold on New Jersey’s 11th District.

As of now, the primary election date is still to be confirmed. Sherrill’s office has not provided comments regarding endorsements or the future political landscape.
