Impact of Immigration Policies on Student Enrollment
As President Donald Trump’s immigration policies continue to be implemented across the nation, many cities traditionally leaning Democratic are witnessing a decline in their immigrant student populations.
For instance, the Miami-Dade School District in Florida has reported a sharp drop in enrollment, with only 2,550 immigrant children currently enrolled. This is a notable decrease from 14,000 during Biden’s last year in office and 20,000 the year prior.
Miami-Dade isn’t the only district affected. The Denver school system has seen enrollment from immigrant families fall to 400 this year, down from 1,500 last year. In Waukegan, a suburb near Chicago, the number of new freshmen has dropped by 100 compared to the previous year. Chelsea, Massachusetts, noted a decrease in new immigrant students, with numbers falling from 592 last year to only 152 this year.
Meanwhile, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school district reports that it has more than 20,000 students missing, with approximately 15 percent being children of undocumented immigrants.
This indicates that the president’s immigration policies are significantly affecting enrollment rates across the board. The causes go beyond families being deported or leaving of their own accord. There’s also a noted decrease in the number of individuals entering the country illegally, resulting in less of the unsustainable growth seen during the Biden administration.
Although it’s concerning that Miami-Dade lost $70 million in funding due to the decline in enrollment, it’s important to consider that illegal immigration has previously cost the state an additional $70 million last year just for educating those children.
Moreover, financial support for the education of noncitizen children continues to rise. For example, in 2019, it was reported that taxpayers contributed over $60 billion for the education of these children during the Biden administration.
Interestingly, each child of undocumented immigrants is estimated to receive over $70,000 in taxpayer support throughout their lifetime.
Recently, Trump celebrated a decrease in foreign students enrolling in universities, noting a downturn of 17 percent this year.
