Pharrell Williams Critiques Politics at Black Ambition Demo Day

During the 5th annual Black Ambition Demo Day held on Friday, musician and producer Pharrell Williams voiced his strong disdain for politics. He stated, “I hate politics. I despise them. It’s a magic trick. It’s not reality.” Williams expressed skepticism about both political parties, arguing that being aligned with either side fosters division. “Well, that’s not a popular view, but if you think about it, you have to say that the well is running dry.”

While addressing the audience, Williams urged the Black community to prioritize excellence over merely leaning on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in the current political climate.

He posed a thought-provoking question to the crowd: “Do you think about what you’re doing it for? Do you think you’re the best? Do you want the job because you’re Black, or because you’re the best?” Continuing, he emphasized the importance of supporting businesses based on their merit rather than their racial background. “It’s important that we have the highest aspirations, and that’s why we should support these businesses. Sure, they happen to be Black and brown, but it should be based on the fact that they are the best, not on the tone of their skin color.”

In a previous interview with The Hollywood Reporter in 2024, Williams had mentioned his aversion to politics, adding that he finds it frustrating when celebrities openly support political candidates. “Some celebrities I respect have their own opinions, but not all of them. I’m one of them who thinks, ‘What? Shut up. No one asked you.’”

Despite his minimal involvement in politics, he faced backlash when his lawyers issued a cease and desist letter after he utilized his hit song “Happy” at a rally in 2018 during President Donald Trump’s first term. While Williams seems disinterested in political participation, he underscores his commitment to the community and acknowledges that there’s much work still to be done.
