Glen Powell’s Return to Austin
Glen Powell has decided to step away from the Hollywood spotlight. In a recent interview with a prominent magazine, the 37-year-old actor, known for his role in “Twisters,” discussed his choice to leave Los Angeles and return to his roots in Austin, Texas.
Powell expressed a need for a peaceful space where he could truly relax. “Living in L.A. … it feels overwhelming; it’s like everyone is caught up in the same rat race,” he remarked. Even though he’s had success, he seemed eager for something different, a change of scenery that felt more authentic.
After relocating to Texas, he mentioned that there’s a lot of filming happening there. “Looks like the competition is heating up,” he noted, which is an interesting shift for the usually Hollywood-centric film industry.
He also decided to take some classes at the University of Texas at Austin. “I just paid my tuition for next semester a couple of days ago,” he said, admitting that he knows the acting business can be unpredictable. “Those who think they’ll stay on top forever haven’t really studied Hollywood’s patterns,” he added. His focus seems to be on hard work and creating meaningful projects that will withstand the test of time.
In a previous interview earlier in 2024, Powell reflected on his decision to leave L.A. His goal had always been to achieve a sense of stability there before going home. He shared that as his parents enter their 70s, spending time with family has become increasingly important to him.
Powell noted the double-edged sword of being in an environment filled with creatives. “It’s enjoyable being around those who share a passion for movies, but sometimes it can take a toll on mental health,” he reflected. He sounded somewhat cautious, contemplating how the constant consumption of entertainment can warp your perspective, making personal experiences feel constricted.
Looking back on his early days in Hollywood, Powell recalled the struggles he faced as a relatively unknown actor. “It’s tough to be in Hollywood when you’re not really getting anywhere,” he mused. His career began in films like “Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over” and “The Great Debaters,” where he made a memorable impression on Denzel Washington. This connection ultimately led Washington to introduce him to an agent who encouraged his move to Los Angeles.
Reflecting on those challenging moments, Powell remarked, “Sometimes you have to trick yourself into believing that setbacks are just chapters in your story,” showing a blend of optimism and realism. He’s expressed gratitude for that time, as it provided him with invaluable lessons about writing and the industry.
Having gained fame from projects like “Top Gun: Maverick,” Powell co-wrote and starred in the 2023 film “Hitman,” which garnered him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor. Currently, he’s appearing in a new adaptation of “The Running Man,” sharing the screen with Coleman Domingo and Josh Brolin.
