Vikings Struggle Despite McCarthy’s Efforts in Latest Game
The Vikings have placed a lot of faith in JJ McCarthy, yet the results have not been promising thus far.
After suffering a close 19-17 defeat to the Bears on Sunday, legendary Vikings player Cris Carter offered sharp criticism towards McCarthy, particularly following Emmanuel Acho’s optimistic tweet.
McCarthy orchestrated a 10-play, 85-yard touchdown drive with just 50 seconds remaining. However, a strong kick return by Devin Duvernay set up the Bears for a game-winning field goal.
Acho tweeted, “JJ McCarthy got the clutch gene!! Struggling all game long but this one was bad! #Skoll,” sharing a clip of McCarthy’s go-ahead touchdown pass.
Carter quickly retorted, “Did you see the first 59 minutes?”
McCarthy’s personal trainer, Greg Holcomb, responded to the criticism by calling Carter a “funny clown” in a now-deleted tweet.
Holcomb defended McCarthy, while head coach Kevin O’Connell acknowledged on Tuesday that there’s still room for improvement. O’Connell pointed out that while McCarthy showed promise during practice, that didn’t effectively carry over to the game.
O’Connell mentioned the importance of McCarthy’s development in skills and techniques, stressing, “We need to start seeing the cement dry.”
He specifically highlighted McCarthy’s footwork as a factor impacting his accuracy. “It’s just about being disciplined,” O’Connell noted. “He sometimes has his hands tied behind his back, hindering his ability to be precise.”
McCarthy only managed 10 completions for 74 yards with two interceptions before that final drive, where he finished the game with 16-of-32 for 150 yards and one touchdown.
Following the game, McCarthy acknowledged his inconsistent performance, saying, “I need to do my job better at a higher level.”
Some of his throws, particularly to star receiver Justin Jefferson, raised eyebrows. McCarthy remarked, “You can’t miss that,” referencing one specific throw that resulted in an interception. “The league is tough—there were three to five decisions I’d take back if I could, and that was one.”
Despite his less-than-ideal body language during the game, Jefferson maintained composure in front of the media with five catches for 61 yards. He reiterated, “It wasn’t the best game for anyone. We could have done better as a team. But, to be fair, J.J. stepped up when it mattered.”
The Vikings, currently at 4-6, face a challenging schedule ahead, with games against the Packers and then the Seahawks, both of whom are clinging to their playoff aspirations.
