Sissy Spacek Reflects on Her Family and Nickname
Sissy Spacek is often preoccupied with thoughts of her family. In a recent discussion with Ethan Hawke, she shared insights about her unusual nickname. Hawke mentioned how his mother was called Sister by relatives, prompting him to ask if “Sissy” was derived from that.
Spacek responded, revealing her real name is Mary Elizabeth. She recalled, “When I started school in first grade, the teachers asked me, ‘Are you Mary or Elizabeth?'” It seems she felt a bit defensive about her name, but the conversation shifted, leaving her thoughts unfinished.
After a brief pause, she noted that “Sissy” is a common nickname among girls in the South. While working on “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” she mentioned the rush whenever her nickname was called on set, as many local girls shared it. “In Texas, everyone seems to be named Sissy or Bubba,” she added with a hint of nostalgia. Her brothers referred to her as their little Sissy, and that nickname has stayed with her.
Spacek’s breakthrough came with the 1976 film “Carrie,” in which she portrayed a high school outcast who wreaks havoc at her prom using telekinesis. Despite achieving stardom, including five Academy Award nominations, she has found solace in the stability of her Virginia farm, where she’s resided for the last 40 years. “I can work in the garden in my pajamas, away from the chaos,” she shared, adding a humorous touch about receiving a battery-powered blower for Mother’s Day.
Reflecting on her upbringing, Spacek chronicled her rise to fame in her 2012 memoir, “My Extraordinary Ordinary Life.” She also delved into her long-lasting marriage with director Jack Fisk, which began in 1974 and resulted in two daughters. When asked about the secret to their enduring partnership, she admits she’s still exploring it. “I wish I could tell you,” she revealed, adding that her husband’s quirky sense of humor and creative spirit play a significant role in their bond.
Spacek expressed pride in her daughters, emphasizing that despite her celebrity status, they have been fortunate to enjoy a life away from the limelight. “They’re thankful for what we gave them, and it shows. They truly are amazing,” she said, her pride evident. “It’s vital to maintain a balance between work and personal life, as that’s what real living is all about.”
