Jeffries Responds to Questions on Garcia’s Retirement Timing
During a segment on CNN’s “The Source” on Tuesday, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries from New York addressed concerns regarding Representative Chuy Garcia from Illinois. Questions arose about whether Garcia had manipulated the timing of his retirement announcement to favor his chief of staff as the sole Democratic candidate for his seat. Jeffries mentioned that lately, they’ve been asked to focus on pressing issues instead of engaging in political games. “We need to tackle the high cost of living and work on improving lives across America,” he stated.
Host Kaitlan Collins inquired about a resolution to reprimand Garcia, noting that he announced his retirement just after the state filing deadline, which coincided with his chief of staff declaring candidacy. This left her as essentially the only Democrat eligible for the position, a situation that led to 23 Democrats joining Republicans on a disapproval resolution. Collins also asked how Jeffries encouraged others to vote against it.
Jeffries replied, “This is a matter for the people of Illinois to resolve. Chuy Garcia has consistently been a strong advocate for the underserved. He has accomplished a lot. My concern was not to support a no-support resolution. There are more pressing issues at play for Americans—like the failing economy, tariffs, and health care problems caused by my Republican colleagues. Millions are at risk of huge increases in health costs that may prevent them from seeing a doctor when needed. The American public made it clear in the recent election what they care about. That’s why Republicans faced significant losses nationwide.” He emphasized that while they gather in the House, partisan antics often overshadow the real issues at hand.
Collins followed up, suggesting that some Democrats feel this kind of maneuvering is part of what drives people away from politics, making it appear deceptive by limiting voter choice. “Does that have any significance?” she asked.
Jeffries countered, “I think the situation speaks for itself. We have to prioritize genuine problems facing the American people, who just indicated two weeks ago that they expect us to address these issues.”
