Teen Arrested in Howard University Shooting Case
Authorities have apprehended a teenager linked to the shooting incident that took place during Howard University’s Homecoming in Washington, D.C., last month.
On November 14th, the Metropolitan Police Department announced the arrest of 17-year-old Kayborn Dudley. He faces multiple serious charges, including five counts of assault with intent to murder while armed, aggravated assault while armed, and possession of a firearm during a violent crime. Dudley is being tried as an adult.
The arrests are tied to an event on October 24 at Howard University’s Yardfest. During this gathering, a group of nine individuals clad in black, some with masks, were seen on campus.
It’s reported that a larger group confronted a smaller one, which included a 13-year-old boy. They shouted, “What’s going on?” to which the smaller group replied, “Nothing,” before moving on.
Surveillance footage allegedly shows Dudley stepping away from the group of victims before opening fire with a handgun shortly after the verbal exchange. Authorities claim that five people were hit, including the 13-year-old, before he fled the scene. The victims comprised three adult males, one adult female, and one juvenile male.
Police, who were already patrolling the area during the event, quickly responded upon hearing gunshots and found the victims, transporting them to a nearby hospital.
Initially, two 19-year-old suspects were detained for possessing a handgun without a license shortly after the shooting. However, they were later cleared of any involvement in the event.
Notably, none of the victims were enrolled at Howard University, although one student from Morgan State University was left paralyzed from the chest down due to the shooting. The female victim continues to receive treatment in a hospital.
Investigators recovered three handguns at the scene, including a Polymer 80, a Smith & Wesson SD9 2.0, and a Glock 19, all of which were suspect firearms.
As of now, Howard University has not released any comments regarding the situation.
After analyzing numerous surveillance videos, detectives identified Dudley as the shooter. He was located and arrested without incident on November 14. Dudley is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on December 18.
No attorney for Dudley has been identified at this time.
