Moody seeks to safeguard federal immigration officers with new penalty legislation

New Law Targeting Threats Against Immigration Officials

Senator Ashley Moody is initiating measures to penalize individuals who threaten federal immigration officials during their duties.

The city of Moody, Florida, has passed a law that prohibits getting within 8 meters of a federal immigration officer while they are on duty, especially after being instructed to wait.

This legislation makes it illegal to obstruct a police officer’s work or to threaten them in any way, including physical harm or harassment.

Breaking this law may result in penalties such as up to five years in prison, fines, or both.

Moody expressed her dismay at the harassment federal employees face while simply trying to do their jobs. “As a law enforcement officer and former attorney general, I am appalled by what I’m hearing. This has to stop,” she stated. She plans to introduce the Halo Act, which aims to implement criminal sanctions for anyone who threatens or interferes with federal employees performing their duties.

The need for such a law comes in response to a troubling rise in violence against immigration officials, especially those working to deport illegal immigrants. Just this past weekend, two vehicle collisions occurred during an immigration enforcement operation in Charlotte, North Carolina, where Border Patrol arrested around 130 illegal immigrants, with at least one police officer reported as injured.

As part of a broader crackdown under the Trump administration, threats directed at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents have surged dramatically. Recent data from the Department of Homeland Security shows an astonishing 8,000% increase in death threats against ICE agents.

Tricia McLaughlin, Assistant Secretary at the Department of Homeland Security, highlighted the severity of the situation, noting that ICE agents face dangerous scenarios daily, including murder bounties and threats against their families. She pointed out that inflammatory rhetoric from some politicians has escalated the risks these law enforcement officers encounter.

It’s a complex issue, one that seems to leave many questions unanswered, particularly about the implication of policies and the safety risks faced by those carrying out immigration laws.
