Kate Winslet Shares Awkward Encounter with King Charles III
Kate Winslet recently reflected on a memorable first meeting with King Charles III back in 1996, which she described as a rather nerve-wracking experience. It was during the royal premiere of “Sense and Sensibility,” and she was just 20 years old at the time.
On a recent episode of a late-night talk show, Winslet recounted how she didn’t expect to meet the king at the premiere. “I had completely overlooked the fact that my dress was almost see-through,” she admitted, laughing off the incident. Thankfully, she had a coat to wrap around herself as King Charles approached. “I was thinking, ‘Oh my God, what if…'” she recalled, clearly still amused by the memory.
Despite the initial panic, Winslet praised King Charles as a kind and approachable person. “He’s really gentle and personable, though it can be a bit daunting to meet him,” she noted.
Winslet also reminisced about another encounter with the king during the King’s Foundation Awards Ceremony in June. She shared a light-hearted moment with Meryl Streep, who was unsure about royal protocols. Winslet recounted, “We were walking to meet him, and Meryl asked if she needed to bow. It was a bit chaotic—should she make it a big bow or…?”
Ultimately, she felt a bit overwhelmed as she tried to navigate the formalities. “Honestly, I didn’t know the right protocol either. I just figured I’d follow her lead,” Winslet explained.
Kimmel chimed in with humor, teasing about who might have been more nervous during those meetings. Winslet confessed that Streep seemed a bit anxious too. It’s not every day you meet royalty, after all!
