Josh Simmons remains silent about his unexplained 22-day absence from the Chiefs

Josh Simmons Returns to Chiefs After Extended Absence

Josh Simmons, a rookie tackle for the Chiefs, was absent for 22 days and missed four games without disclosing why. He rejoined the team two weeks ago and spoke to reporters for the first time on Wednesday, sharing details about his absence that began just hours before the game against the Lions on October 12.

“Out of respect, we would like to keep it in-house,” Simmons mentioned. “I know everyone wants to know, but it’s something I want to keep private. Obviously, what Polynesians rely on most is their families. Once you’re in there, everything is much better.” His situation was previously described by the team as “personal reasons,” but on Wednesday, the 22-year-old confirmed it involved a “family matter.”

While he was away, Simmons stayed committed to his training, working out and studying the playbook, preparing for a potential return on November 3. “I was making sure I was working out, making sure my legs were feeling strong and keeping my nervous system awake,” he explained. “I was ready to play. My communication with the team was very transparent, especially toward the end. I also had teammates checking in on me, which definitely lifts your spirits.”

“After being away from the game, I was itching to get back and fight for them,” he added.

Coach Andy Reid seemed unconcerned about the situation, stating, “He had to work, and he did it.” Now back with the team, Simmons is showing promise. In just six games, he has recorded the third-best pressure rate (5.4 percent) among eligible left tackles and is set to continue with the Chiefs for the rest of the season.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes praised his performance: “He’s a great player. He’s getting better every time he plays. For him, it’s just about continuing to push himself day in and day out to be the best player he can be. The sky’s the limit. He’s got to keep pushing to get even better.”
