Home Invasion in Jacksonville: Elderly Man Fights Back
In Jacksonville, Florida, police responded to a home around 12:41 p.m. on Tuesday after reports of a shooting were made. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office revealed that a man in his 70s, residing on Arlex Drive near Merrill Road, reported that an armed individual had broken through the back window of his home.
According to the victim, he was directed to a back bedroom and instructed to hand over his car keys and valuables, as per the sheriff’s department. However, he didn’t just give in.
The homeowner managed to grab a firearm and shot the intruder in the shoulder, prompting the suspect to flee the scene with the homeowner’s vehicle. About 30 minutes later, police located the suspect driving the stolen car on Fort Caroline Road, not far from the scene of the invasion.
Brandon Meredith, who was driving on University Boulevard at the time, witnessed the arrest. He recounted, “Everyone pulled out Tasers. They were moving in formation toward the back of the car when they heard a pop. They quickly restrained him and placed him on the ground while paramedics tended to him. The whole intersection was blocked for about two hours.”
The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, was taken to a hospital for his injuries and remains in police custody. Meredith expressed relief over the outcome, stating, “I’m really happy that one more of these guys is leaving the city.”
Authorities encouraged anyone with information regarding the incident to get in touch with the sheriff’s office at 904-630-0500, mentioning that anonymous tips can also be submitted through Crime Stoppers.
