Mark Cuban shares his perspective on the Luka Doncic trade following Nico Harrison's accusations.

Nico Harrison’s Exit and Luka Doncic’s Trade Impact on the Mavericks

Nico Harrison, the recently dismissed general manager of the Mavericks, finds himself in a precarious position following Luka Doncic’s trade.

Mark Cuban, the team’s minority owner and now an advisor, took swift action when he caught wind of Doncic being traded to the Lakers. Cuban recounted an incident during an event in Florida, recalling, “I got an email from Nico saying, ‘Call me.’ Initially, I thought it was about him considering the trade, but then I realized it was already done. It was frustrating; my party couldn’t intervene.”

Interestingly, it was Harrison who later shifted the blame onto Cuban for losing Jalen Brunson to free agency. Although this move hasn’t received the same spotlight as the Doncic trade, it’s still viewed as a significant misstep for the Mavericks.

According to reports, Harrison held Cuban accountable for what he deemed the biggest blunder in Mavericks history—allowing Brunson to leave for the Knicks in the summer of 2022 while acquiring Christian Wood. Internal tensions arose, particularly with coach Jason Kidd, who wasn’t pleased with the situation.

Brunson’s deal with the Knicks was worth $104 million in 2022, and he later restructured his contract with the team for a better deal. Cuban pointed fingers at Brunson’s father, Rick, for Jalen’s departure, all while the Knicks faced sanctions related to the circumstances surrounding Brunson’s signing.

After Cuban sold control of the Mavericks to the Dumont family for $3.5 billion—a valuation lower than expected—an internal power struggle began to unfold. Surprisingly, Cuban didn’t retain control of basketball decisions, leading to Harrison being given the go-ahead for many trades.

Ultimately, Harrison executed the trade involving Doncic, which many believe was below market value. Doncic was shipped off to the Lakers for Anthony Davis—who has faced injury issues since the trade—guard Max Christie, and a first-round pick.

The consensus among analysts is that other teams, like the Thunder and Spurs, could’ve offered much better deals. The negative backlash was so intense that when ESPN’s Shams Charania reported the news, many thought his account had been compromised.

Cuban commented on Harrison’s decision, saying, “I respect that. He believed it was the right choice. Maybe in the future, this will be his own ‘Steve Nash moment’ if Doncic goes on to clinch multiple MVPs.” Reflecting on past decisions, including letting Nash go, Cuban seemed to be wrestling with his own history.

Meanwhile, Doncic has been performing splendidly with the Lakers, averaging a career-high 34.6 points per game and helping the team to an 11-4 start this season.

As for Harrison, who shared his unemployed status on Instagram, the Mavericks are currently struggling with a 4-12 record, even with Rookie of the Year candidate Cooper Flagg on the roster, following a recent narrow loss to Brunson’s Knicks.
