FBI Investigates Death of Florida Teen on Cruise Ship

The FBI is currently looking into the puzzling death of an 18-year-old Florida cheerleader aboard a Carnival cruise ship. This investigation is unfolding amid a legal dispute involving her stepmother and her ex-boyfriend, which has brought to light some information that might compel the stepmother to testify against her son.

It’s been two weeks since Anna Kepner, an aspiring Navy sailor, was discovered deceased in her cabin on the Carnival Horizon cruise ship. Although authorities have yet to disclose the cause or manner of her death, a recent court case involving her stepbrother suggests he is considered a suspect.

Kepner’s stepmother, Shawntel, has requested a delay in the custody hearing concerning her children until the criminal inquiry is resolved. This situation might put her in a challenging legal position, as noted by Chicago-based criminal defense attorney Donna Rotunno. She pointed out that, typically, a mother cannot avoid testifying against her son. The court could possibly require her testimony or hold her in contempt if she refuses.

Shawntel has denied any involvement of her eldest son in violent incidents with her ex-husband, but she did acknowledge that “there is an open FBI investigation” regarding her 16-year-old son.

Meanwhile, law enforcement reports indicate that surveillance footage from the ship, featuring both Anna and a suspect, has been retrieved. The FBI is analyzing more recordings from the cruise in the hours leading up to her death. They are also looking into the records of stolen room keys from the ship.

According to a former FBI agent familiar with maritime cases, once the investigation team is on board, they will conduct multiple interviews and request all surveillance video associated with the incident. It’s crucial, she mentioned, to establish who accessed the cabin where Anna was found.

A memorial service for Anna is scheduled for Thursday evening in her hometown, Titusville, Florida.
