Rep. Al Green to Introduce Articles of Impeachment Against Trump
Rep. Al Green, a Democrat from Texas, stated on Thursday that he plans to introduce articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump, viewing it as a test for his party’s stance against the current administration.
“I will file articles of impeachment before the Christmas break. I promise,” Green remarked. “We have to engage; this is democracy in action. Every one of us has a role in this process.”
He noted his intention to file the motion as a priority, which would compel the legislation to be discussed within two days, potentially leading it to a vote.
Green also mentioned that he and supporters would organize a peaceful protest at the Lincoln Memorial this Saturday.
This announcement marks Green’s fifth attempt at filing impeachment papers as Democratic leaders in Congress strategize on how to effectively counter President Trump’s actions.
Among party members, there are growing frustrations, particularly from more progressive factions, directed at leaders like Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer for lacking effective measures during the recent government shutdown. Prior to that, some, including Maine Senator Graham Platner, called for new leadership to better resist Republican advances.
Dave Mitic, representing an activist group, publicly criticized Democratic leadership at Green’s press conference. “This is what Americans want—fighting spirit. Are you listening, Democrats? Leader Schumer, Leader Jeffries?” he questioned.
President Trump has faced impeachment twice in the past—first in 2019 for abuse of power and again in 2021 for inciting insurrection, both times resulting in the Senate dismissing the charges.
When asked if the latest attempt might backfire on leaders Jeffries and Schumer if they don’t support it, Green sidestepped the question, claiming to have about 80 members backing his initiative so far.
Green expressed a strong belief in the Constitution, stating, “Anyone who votes to dismiss the articles is effectively against impeachment.” While he did not specify the nature of the impeachment complaint, it’s clear he is pushing for action.
