Coaches Support Each Other Amid Controversy
In anticipation of this weekend’s game, Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson expressed support for Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin. This follows Tomlin’s defense of cornerback Jalen Ramsey, who was involved in a spitting incident last weekend.
Before the Bears host the Steelers on Sunday, Johnson praised Tomlin’s leadership and success. He commented on how remarkable it is that Tomlin has maintained a winning record throughout his tenure. Johnson seemed genuinely impressed and noted that Tomlin sets high standards for his players. He specifically mentioned Tomlin’s thoughtful response regarding Ramsey’s ejection after the team’s Week 11 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals.
“I mean, the way he handles situations, it’s really commendable. He’s absolutely right about the incidents that happened this week,” Johnson remarked.
Johnson highlighted that Tomlin was justified when Ramsey reacted to being spat on by Jamar Chase, leading to a physical confrontation. While Ramsey was ejected from the game, Chase ended up facing a suspension following the league’s review of the matter.
Tomlin, addressing reporters about the incident, stated, “I was aware of it. I spoke to Jaylen during the game. It was unfortunate, and it’s something you don’t typically expect in football.” He avoided going into details, noting that the NFL had already taken action, so they would simply move on.
Later, when pressed for his message to Ramsey, Tomlin remained tight-lipped. Interestingly, Ramsey himself had made his feelings clear regarding the spitting issue, indicating some strong feelings about it.
The Steelers are preparing for their game against the Bears, hopeful that Aaron Rodgers will play despite an injury.
