On Thursday, police in New York City provided further insights into the tragic shooting of Jets cornerback Kris Boyd in Midtown. A tip has led to the identification of a potential shooter, with a $185,000 watch also discovered at the scene that might hold significant clues.
Boyd, 29, was out enjoying the night with fellow Jets linebacker Jamian Sherwood, wide receiver Irvin Charles, and friends from Texas when he was fatally shot early Sunday morning. This occurred during a confrontation with a group outside an Asian fusion restaurant called Say Less, according to police reports.
Approximately a day later, the NYPD shared footage of the suspected assailant. NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenney mentioned that he had facilitated an informant’s approach via Crimestoppers.
Kenney remarked, “We combed through their social media and obtained a potential shooter’s law enforcement ID from an officer who had previously engaged with him. I won’t disclose the name just yet, but it’s very close.”
Additionally, Kenney pointed out that the luxury watch recovered at the shooting site has yet to be claimed by any Jets player. “We’re looking into that. At no point did anyone claim there was a robbery or that anyone attempted to steal from the Jets players,” he clarified.
The suspect was reportedly part of a group outside the restaurant that began to hurl insults at Boyd and his companions regarding their attire.
Kenney elaborated, saying: “[They asked], ‘Why do you think you’re better than us?’” Boyd’s group initially entered the restaurant but left shortly after, feeling the atmosphere wasn’t right. “They decided to leave. As they stepped outside, they confronted the same group, who continued their verbal attacks, questioning their fashion choices,” Kenney explained.
It was during this encounter that Boyd was shot, with the bullet becoming embedded in his lung. Fortunately, he provided an encouraging update on social media Wednesday, indicating he is starting to breathe without assistance, although he remained hospitalized as of Thursday.
