Brendan Fraser Discusses U.S.-Japan Cultural Differences

Brendan Fraser, the Oscar-winning actor, recently shared his thoughts on the cultural contrasts between Japan and the United States after spending four months living and working abroad. His remarks came during an appearance on “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” where Meyers asked about his experience returning to American culture.

Fraser chuckled as he responded, saying, “I came back and said, ‘You’re doing it wrong.'” He highlighted some peculiarities of American life, quipping about how “we don’t know how to eat,” lack of public transport, and even a playful jab about the country not having jet packs yet. He suggested there’s room for improvement in manners, which drew laughter and applause from the audience.

He continued to compare norms, saying that in Japan, it’s considered inappropriate to burden others with personal troubles, adding that saying “no” often implies “maybe not today” or encourages someone to consider other options.

These reflections were a part of his promotion for the film “Rental Family,” in which he portrays an American actor involved in Japan’s “Rental Family” industry—real-world services that allow individuals to hire substitutes to fulfill emotional or social roles. This role particularly immersed Fraser in Japanese daily life and etiquette.

Fraser described his time in Tokyo as “eye-opening” and transformative. He expressed joy in discovering new aspects of life both as an actor and a tourist. “I love the discovery aspect,” he said, noting that early arrival in Japan allowed him to form his unique story of the city.

As he explored, utilizing a pocket translator to communicate, Fraser felt a deeper connection to his surroundings. “It was one of the most eye-opening experiences of my career,” he remarked.

“Rental Family” is scheduled for release on November 21st.
