Cracker Barrel CEO Addresses Redesign Controversy

In a recent interview with BlazeTV, Cracker Barrel’s CEO, Julie Masino, discussed the company’s decision to redesign its interiors, focusing on aspects like lighting and comfort. It seems the push for change, however, didn’t come without backlash.

Masino faced criticism back in August when the brand was accused of altering its logo and interior look. There were concerns over how some elements were simplified, leaving just minimal visuals that barely resembled the traditional Cracker Barrel charm.

During the interview, Masino described her emotional experience while discussing the controversy. She expressed that she was worried about her role being misunderstood, stating, “I want to set the record straight. This is the brand that people have always known and loved.”

Beck, who interviewed her, probed directly, asking if she was surprised that she wasn’t fired. Masino candidly replied, “I feel like America fired me.” Beck noted that the public’s reaction was understandably intense.

Masino’s goal is to ensure that Cracker Barrel remains a beloved brand, especially for its roughly 70,000 employees who rely on it for their livelihoods. She emphasized that her responsibility lies in making sure the company can support them.

As the conversation progressed, Masino was able to clarify the motivation behind the redesign. She shared that the aim was to enhance the customer experience, pointing out that the previous dim lighting made it hard for guests to read the menu. There were even stories of patrons discomforted by the seating arrangements during meals.

“How can we make the store more comfortable?” became a guiding question for her team. Masino also mentioned her surprise at the controversy the redesign stirred. She had expected feedback about booth arrangements rather than the alterations in decor.

Even as she navigated through tough questions and emotional moments, Masino conveyed a sense of hope for the brand’s future while maintaining core elements of its nostalgic value.

In conclusion, she affirmed that “everyone is welcome at Cracker Barrel.” Heisel echoed this sentiment, inviting all, stating, “Come as you are.” The discussion ended on a note of reconciliation, with both Masino and Heisel reinforcing their commitment to the brand’s legacy while shaping its future.
