New York Mayor-elect Faces Funding Challenges for Free Bus Ride Promise

Newly elected New York Mayor Zoran Mamdani has made headlines with his promise of free bus rides for city residents. However, now that the election is over, it seems he may encounter difficulties securing the necessary funding to implement this initiative.

In a recent interview, PIX11’s Dan Mannarino pressed Mamdani on how he intends to finance the program if New York Governor Kathy Hochul opposes the proposed tax increases.

Mamdani suggested that raising the corporate or personal income tax on those earning over $1 million annually could be the “most obvious way” to fund the program. But he emphasized that the crucial point is to ensure it gets funded, stating, “It’s not about how we do it, but that we actually do it.”

AOC Cancels Talks Amid Mamdani’s Transition Preparations

The mayor-elect’s campaign has proposed raising the state’s corporate tax rate to 11.5% and introducing a 2% income tax in New York City for high earners. As a self-identified democratic socialist, he highlighted the free bus ride policy as a cornerstone of his campaign.

Transition Fund Request and Donor Policy

To bolster his transition, Mamdani has appealed to supporters for $4 million, promising to avoid reliance on wealthy donors.

When Mannarino previously asked Governor Hochul about her stance on tax hikes, she downplayed their necessity, asserting that raising taxes is not advisable at a time when affordability issues are critical.

Governor’s Resistance to Free Bus Initiative

“Free bus rides are an investment in our people and our economy, supporting workers, small businesses, and all New Yorkers who deserve a more connected city,” Mamdani shared recently in a post. The path to making this vision a reality, however, remains uncertain as he moves into office.
