Ovechkin Shines with Hat Trick in Capitals Win
Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin made headlines again last night, notching a hat trick in an 8-4 victory against the Montreal Canadiens. This impressive performance marked his 33rd career hat trick, pushing him ahead of Joe Sakic into 10th place on the all-time NHL points list. Interestingly, he also tied Brett Hull for fourth place in hat tricks in NHL history.
At 40 years old, Ovechkin became only the sixth player in NHL history to achieve a hat trick after reaching the age of 40. Last season, he set a record by becoming the all-time leader in points, which now totals 907 following Thursday’s game.
His first goal of the evening came early in the first period during a power play, where he executed a wrist shot that put the Capitals on the board first. The excitement didn’t stop there, as his second goal, scored with less than four minutes left in the game, gave the Capitals the lead at 6-4.
To seal the deal, Ovechkin completed his hat trick into an empty net as the Canadiens tried to mount a comeback. He managed to drive the puck three-quarters of the ice length, bringing the score to 7-4.
Ovechkin has been on a roll lately, scoring in the last four games and racking up seven goals over the last six outings. The Capitals now stand at 11 wins, 8 losses, and 2 overtime losses and are set to take on the Tampa Bay Lightning next.
