Kennedy Center Director Critiques Senator’s Investigation

Richard Grenell, the Director of the Kennedy Center, criticized Democratic Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island for what he termed an “inadvertent” and “inaccurate” investigation regarding performing arts facilities.

The White House—an ex-officio member of the Kennedy Center Board—recently released a series of reports. They are set to confront Grenell on Thursday. In response, Grenell issued a letter where he reprimanded the White House for relying on “inaccurate gossip” and “partisan reporters” in forming its conclusions, stating that senators lacked any “basic fact-checking.”

Moreover, the White House accused the Kennedy Center, under the leadership of former President Donald Trump, of significantly reducing event rental costs for wealthy political allies, specifically mentioning NewsNation, and extravagantly spending on new hires. Grenell claimed that the allegations made against him are substantiated.

In his detailed letter, Grenell provided a point-by-point account of improvements to the Kennedy Center’s budget. He also highlighted a substantial reduction in staffing in the development department, which shrank from 94 to 16 personnel.

At a Kennedy Center event, Grenell remarked on the claims from the White House that NewsNation was favored due to its alleged ties with Trump. He mentioned that individuals like Chris Cuomo, Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman, and Stephen A. Smith are neither Republicans nor Trump supporters, countering the narrative that these associations were politically motivated.

Additionally, records revealed that FIFA was not charged for an event at the Kennedy Center, which Grenell asserts led to millions of dollars in contributions to the center. However, claims made by Grenell couldn’t be independently verified.

The former ambassador and acting director of national intelligence took further issue with the White House for allegedly fostering an all-white social club. He noted the contributions of Lisa Dale, a Chilean-American, who he suggested wouldn’t have been welcomed at certain private clubs, highlighting that she raised over $117 million this year.

Grenell ended his letter with an invitation for Sen. Whitehouse to visit the Kennedy Center and experience its “common sense programs and responsible financial management.”

Neither the White House nor Grenell’s office responded to requests for additional comments.
