Liberal Columnist Critiques National Anthem at Concerts

A liberal columnist expressed her dissatisfaction on Thursday regarding the playing of the American national anthem in Washington, D.C.

Jamie Stiehm, who has contributed to various media outlets, suggested that while “The Star-Spangled Banner” might fit well in sports venues, its presence before a classical music concert feels out of place, especially in today’s politically charged atmosphere. Stiehm believes that classical music transcends borders, while the national anthem draws the focus back into the sphere of influence of President Donald Trump.

After attending a performance by the National Symphony Orchestra at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, she shared her thoughts. Under Trump’s administration, the tradition of playing the national anthem before concerts was established.

Stiehm remarked, “Dear reader, the new administration of President Donald Trump at the Beloved Center has mandated that the National Symphony Orchestra stand and play the national anthem before its concerts. What a cacophony. Ballparks and stadiums are great places for such performances, but classical music is an international language. This is just another way Trump will leave his fingerprints on our city’s landscape after demolishing the East Wing of the White House.”

Additionally, Stiehm reflected on her experience at the concert, saying, “Yes, I loved the crashing chords of Saint-Saens’ Organ Symphony and the lyrical airiness of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1. I didn’t really like the Star-Spangled Banner.” She mentioned how the event reminded one of the participants of her childhood in Germany during World War II.

In conversation with DCNF, the columnist reiterated her stance on the issue, stating, “There’s a time and a place for everything.”
