Missouri Judge Steps Down After Elvis-Themed Court Antics

A judge from Missouri, known for sporting an Elvis Presley wig and playing the rock icon’s music in court, has decided to resign. Judge Matthew Thornhill mentioned that he aimed to bring some light-heartedness to the courtroom, especially during stressful times for those involved. However, he admitted that this approach could potentially compromise the seriousness and integrity of court proceedings.

Thornhill, who serves in St. Louis, has agreed to take a six-month unpaid leave, followed by a return to the bench for an additional 18 months, after which he would officially resign. This arrangement was made to sidestep a disciplinary hearing with the state board.

The state’s Retirement, Dismissal and Disciplinary Commission pointed out Thornhill’s habit of dressing like the King of Rock and Roll in court, showcasing photos of him and his staff in wigs and sunglasses.

Thornhill also reportedly brought up political topics while presiding, openly stating his party affiliation and supporting certain candidates. His tendency to wear a wig during Halloween, play Elvis music upon entering the courtroom, and even encourage litigants to take oaths accompanied by tunes from their phones, was also highlighted. It’s been noted that, at times, he would randomly reference Elvis throughout court proceedings.

The commission concluded that Thornhill’s Elvis-themed antics violated essential rules intended to maintain order and decorum within the courthouse and to uphold the public’s confidence in the judicial system.

The agreement regarding his resignation is pending before the Missouri Supreme Court, which has accepted references for 35 individuals from Thornhill. He was elected as an associate circuit judge in 2006 and later as a circuit judge in 2024, marking him as the longest-serving judge in St. Charles County. Over his career, he has overseen 25 jury trials among thousands of others.

Interestingly, Thornhill had previously shared on the court’s website that he was a fan of Elvis, along with other hobbies like surfing and golfing with his children. Notably, in 2008, he received a reprimand and a fine for giving a woman a fake baseball signed by Terry Bradshaw, although he maintains that he did not steal the ball.
