Convicted Sex Offender Allegedly Assaults Students in Arizona School
A recently released sex offender is accused of sexually assaulting students at an Arizona elementary school while posing as a doctor, prompting significant outrage and concern among parents.
According to the Phoenix Police Department, 25-year-old Abel Kai Gubra faces charges of sexual assault and kidnapping. He allegedly entered the grounds of Orangewood Elementary School, identified himself as a doctor, and lured students into a classroom on November 19.
Law enforcement responded after school officials reported the incident. Police stated, “When officers arrived, they learned that an unauthorized male had entered the school and lured a girl into a classroom, where he assaulted her. At one point, she managed to push him away, after which he fled the scene.”
Reports indicate that Gubra used the guise of a doctor to attract the student’s interest, claiming he needed to examine her.
After he escaped the school, authorities located Gubra, who was already in jail on multiple charges. He had recently been released on similar offenses and is also believed to be connected to human smuggling activities across the U.S. border.
Additionally, a prosecutor mentioned in Gubra’s court appearance that he had two prior convictions in 2021 for sexual offenses involving minors, marking him as a registered sex offender.
The Washington Elementary School District stated that administrators promptly called 911 and placed the school under lockdown for over an hour following the incident. They indicated that Gubra had been on school premises for about 10 minutes, during which he had inappropriate contact with a student.
A statement was later shared with parents, revealing that Gubra was previously a student at Orangewood Elementary from 2012 to 2015. Initial reports suggested he entered through a door behind a student, but further investigation clarified that he accessed the school through an unlocked lobby door, accompanying a student who arrived late.
The school district also announced that one staff member was placed on administrative leave pending the investigation’s results. Principal Emily Patterson expressed awareness of the alarming nature of the incident and assured parents that they are thoroughly reviewing safety procedures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Gubra’s bail has been set at $500,000, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for December 1.
