Justice Alito grants victory to Texas Republicans, temporarily reinstates Republican congressional map

Justice Alito Restores Texas Republican Map Temporarily

On Friday, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito offered a temporary boost to Texas Republicans by reinstating their legislative map from August, which has a Republican-leaning bias.

After facing significant pushback from Democratic lawmakers, Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced that the “Big Beautiful Map” became law on August 29. This new congressional map could potentially provide Republicans with five additional seats in the upcoming midterm elections. It’s a substantial development for the party, to say the least.

However, the launch of this map ignited a heated debate among Democrats, leading to a successful gerrymandering effort in California. Several lawsuit challenges arose from racially-based plaintiff groups backed by Democrats, including the League of Latin American Citizens.

The plaintiffs argue that the map constitutes unconstitutional racial gerrymandering and sought an injunction from a three-judge panel in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas to prevent its usage in the 2026 elections.

On Tuesday, the court issued a 2-1 ruling favoring the liberal advocacy groups, indicating that the challengers are likely to demonstrate a case for racially discriminatory gerrymandering.

Judge Jeffrey Brown, who presided over the case, remarked that while politics undoubtedly influenced the creation of the 2025 map, it encapsulated more than just political maneuvering. He pointed to substantial evidence suggesting racial gerrymandering was at play.

California Governor Gavin Newsom was quick to celebrate the ruling, asserting it was a win for democracy. He remarked that “Donald Trump and Greg Abbott played with fire, got burned, and democracy won. This ruling is a victory for Texas and for all Americans fighting for free and fair elections.”

Nevertheless, Abbott and Texas officials soon recognized that their celebrations might have been a bit too early. They appealed the judgment to the Supreme Court.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton expressed concerns that “radical left-wing activists are abusing the judicial system to derail Republican policy and steal seats in the U.S. House of Representatives,” stressing his commitment to combat this perceived threat.

Justice Alito decided to stay the ruling from the lower court on Friday, providing opponents of the Republican map until Monday to comply with the temporary order. Consequently, the Republican map will remain in place while the state’s appeal is underway.
