Brandon Aiyuk’s Uncertain Future with the 49ers

The relationship between Brandon Aiyuk and the San Francisco 49ers seems to be hitting a rough patch, despite Aiyuk having signed a long-term deal with the team last season.

Aiyuk has been sidelined for the entire 2024 season due to a knee injury acquired during the year, with expectations for his return sometime in 2025. However, things have taken a tense turn. Reports indicate that the 49ers have chosen to waive the nearly $25 million guaranteed option in Aiyuk’s 2026 contract.

As a result, there is growing speculation that Aiyuk’s time in San Francisco may be drawing to a close.

Recent news from The Athletic suggests Aiyuk has not participated in team meetings or activities recently, which has caused frustration within the organization. Sources say the 49ers argue that his absence breaches his contract, leading them to void the guaranteed money in his deal.

Interestingly, word has it that Aiyuk has communicated with NFL Players Association representatives, indicating he won’t file a formal complaint regarding this decision. This could pave the way for his release at the season’s end.

Interestingly, Aiyuk had initially signed a significant four-year, $120 million contract extension back in August 2024, before he faced a severe knee injury in October that year, which ultimately ended his season prematurely.

Given the considerable amount involved in his contract, many would find it surprising if he were to become a free agent by 2026. Aiyuk was a first-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, and he had a standout 2022 season, racking up impressive numbers—78 receptions for over 1,000 yards and eight touchdowns.

In 2023, he further cemented his role as the 49ers’ leading receiver, achieving 75 catches for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns. This success prompted him to seek a new contract even before the rookie deal was officially over, as the team had already picked up his fifth-year option.

As it stands, the situation remains murky regarding Aiyuk’s future with the 49ers, who currently hold a 7-4 record and are positioned for the playoffs as they approach Week 12. Interestingly, the 49ers haven’t had a bye week yet, but they’re scheduled for one in Week 14.
