The American Dream is Dwindling for Young Americans

For a lot of young Americans, achieving the American Dream is becoming a tougher nut to crack. The rising costs of living, particularly in terms of homeownership, have severely impacted this goal. The confluence of soaring house prices, high interest rates, and a significant shortage of housing means that buying a home is increasingly out of reach. As it stands, the average age for first-time homebuyers has climbed to 40 years old.

Several proposals have been suggested to help young families regain the ability to purchase homes. One idea that’s particularly controversial is President Trump’s 50-year mortgage plan.

In a discussion on “Sarah Gonzalez Unfiltered,” host Sarah Gonzalez mentioned a more straightforward option that seems to be overlooked: eliminating property taxes altogether.

In Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis is actively advocating for the removal of property taxes, labeling them as “rents to the government.”

According to Sarah, repealing property taxes is often considered a typical conservative stance. She argues that it’s unfair for someone to pay off a home over decades only to find they are still essentially renting from the government.

Yet, there are conservatives who counter this viewpoint, suggesting that getting rid of property taxes might lead older homeowners to keep their properties longer, thus limiting availability for younger buyers.

“So, what’s the solution here? Are we supposed to push elderly homeowners out of houses they’ve paid off just so younger people can grab them up? It’s a bit contradictory, isn’t it?” Sarah questions.

Furthermore, senior citizens often benefit from a tax cap that significantly reduces their property taxes compared to younger owners, providing yet another reason for baby boomers to hold onto their homes. Some conservatives propose raising taxes on older residents, but Sarah argues this would mirror the very criticism socialists have about taxing the wealthy.

Supporters of property taxes often claim that they are essential for funding public education. Still, Sarah contends that most true conservatives don’t want to finance schools they believe are indoctrinating children.

If the aim is to ensure adequate funding for essential services like police and fire departments, the focus should be on eliminating waste and fraud first. Sarah suggests that if expenditures are unchecked at the federal level, they are likely out of control locally as well.

Ultimately, Sarah believes that abolishing property taxes benefits everyone involved. Not only would it lift a financial burden off many individuals, but it would also create a scenario where, when an elderly homeowner passes away, a younger family wouldn’t be burdened with a large property tax bill, making home-buying more feasible.

“Think about it,” she says. “Suppose your wealthy parents want to pass down their valuable land to you. But the astronomical taxes they pay each year are just unsustainable.”

“For young people aiming for homeownership, property taxes represent a significant hurdle. Let’s tackle this issue together,” she concludes.
