Kathie Lee Gifford Reflects on Her Long Friendship with Kris Jenner
Kathie Lee Gifford recently shared insights about her enduring friendship with Kris Jenner during an interview. At 72, Gifford spoke about her new thriller film, “Nero & Paul,” her perspectives on reality television, and, of course, her bond with Jenner. “We’ve been friends for 50 years,” she remarked. They met when Gifford was just 22 and Jenner was 20, and though neither was well-known at the time, an instant connection formed between them.
As Gifford described, while Jenner was establishing her life in Los Angeles with her first husband, Robert Kardashian, Gifford moved to New York City. There’s that common bond—they both chased their ambitions, yet their lives took different paths. Gifford joked, reflecting on Jenner’s rise, “We all know what happened.” She humorously noted her role in suggesting that Jenner and her family pursue a reality show, which led to their massive fame with “Keeping Up with the Kardashians.”
“Since then, it’s been success, boom, boom, boom,” Gifford commented. However, she emphasized that for her, nothing significant has really changed; fundamentally, she feels connected to the same person she met decades ago.
Although she advised Jenner to embark on the reality show venture, Gifford herself has consistently turned down such offers, preferring a private life. “I’m not acting out my life. I’m living it,” she explained. She wanted to ensure her family remained out of the public eye, balancing her career choices with her desire for family privacy.
Gifford acknowledged that reality TV shapes what audiences see; she observed that Jenner is essentially performing for the cameras. “Kris is acting on her show,” she stated, noting that producers often guide scenarios to create engaging moments.
Despite her usual aversion to large gatherings, Gifford attended Jenner’s recent 70th birthday party, bridging their past and present. She arrived prepared to celebrate their longstanding friendship rather than simply joining a large event. Before the party, she told Jenner, “I’m here to love you,” wanting to focus on their journey together and the faith they’ve maintained over the years.
Finding a quiet corner during the celebration, Gifford avoided the spotlight, giving Jenner her moment. Together, they reminisced over drinks, recalling shared experiences and the growth each has undergone; Gifford noted the contrast in their family lives, with Jenner enjoying a new relationship and Gifford as a widow, but ultimately, they recognize that they remain the same at heart.
Besides discussing her friendship, Gifford talked about her book, “Nero and Paul,” which integrates historical facts with fictional narratives regarding Roman Emperor Nero and Apostle Paul. This story reveals the perils early Christians faced during Nero’s reign while highlighting Paul’s transformation from persecutor to martyr. Gifford illustrated the contrasts between their lives, showcasing how evil persists yet emphasizing the presence of faith throughout history.
“It’s so exciting that I want to turn it into a documentary series,” she expressed, highlighting the thrilling aspects of history and inviting others to engage with her storytelling, perhaps in a more digestible format than a traditional book.
