Bill Maher Critiques Jimmy Kimmel’s Wife Over Political Ultimatum
On Friday, Bill Maher, the host of “Real Time,” voiced his disapproval of Molly McNerney, Jimmy Kimmel’s wife, claiming she issued an “ultimatum” regarding politics to her family members who supported President Trump.
McNerney, an executive producer for “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” shared on the “We Can Do Hard Things” podcast that she had reached out to some conservative relatives in a last-ditch effort to convince them not to vote for Trump in the upcoming 2024 election. She mentioned emailing a list of “10 reasons not to vote” for Trump and indicated she had cut ties with some family members over their political choices.
Maher referenced her statements while discussing the impact of political differences on family relationships. He criticized her for potentially severing connections with relatives who didn’t heed her warning against supporting Trump.
“Since Molly McNerney, Jimmy Kimmel’s wife, recently spoke about this, I think it’s fair to comment,” he noted. “She claims she lost touch with family because she sent them reasons not to vote for Trump, and some still didn’t listen.” Maher gestured dramatically as he spoke.
“Ten reasons? I could think of a hundred, but I wouldn’t present that as an ultimatum to anyone,” he added. “An ultimatum doesn’t change minds; it makes people reconsider themselves.” Maher questioned how McNerney framed her arguments, implying that her views suggested a lack of understanding of differing political perspectives.
He continued, saying something like, “Imagine crafting ten reasons why 77 million Americans might not trust you in power. I say that as someone who supports the Democratic Party—it’s not solely her fault that they lost.” Maher concluded his critique on McNerney’s approach to family and politics.
Meanwhile, ABC and Disney have yet to respond to requests for comment on the situation.
In her podcast appearance, McNerney expressed feelings of betrayal toward family members who voted for Trump, particularly after her husband clashed with him a few months prior.
Disney has temporarily suspended “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” following backlash over Kimmel’s comments related to a recent controversy. Kimmel returned just a week later.
Molly expressed her struggles with personal relationships, stating, “I feel hurt when people in my family support Trump because it feels like a rejection of my husband and our family values.”
She also shared that she feels a deeper connection with family despite the strains, but emphasized that, for her, political matters transcend party lines, focusing instead on family values, which she believes are not represented in the current Republican agenda.
“Growing up, I believed in taking care of the sick and the poor, a Christian ideal that I feel is lacking in the Republican Party. It leaves me conflicted and angry, which isn’t a healthy place to be,” McNerney noted. “Seeing the news daily and connecting it back to certain family members becomes frustrating when you’re trying to navigate these relationships.”
