Despite the closure of the main office for the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), its individual teams are still functioning to combat potential fraud and mismanagement, according to recent information. White House press secretary Liz Houston emphasized that President Trump is committed to reducing waste and fraud within the federal government.
Initially reported by Reuters, the closure of DOGE came about after a meeting with Human Resources Director Scott Cooper. There were claims that DOGE essentially no longer operates. However, an administration source disputed this, asserting that the principles of DOGE—like deregulation and combating fraud—are still upheld, even without centralized leadership.
The White House confirmed that while the central office is closed, separate teams in various agencies continue their work effectively. However, there was no immediate response regarding the specifics of when the central office closed or the reasoning behind the timing.
Context and Background
President Trump established DOGE through an executive order in January, transforming the U.S. Digital Service originally launched by former President Obama. Trump’s directive stated that DOGE would continue its work until July 4, 2026, assigning responsibilities to detect and eliminate overspending, which are still being carried out by the teams functioning outside the central office.
Elon Musk had a prominent public role as DOGE’s face early in its operation but resigned amid conflicts over major legislation criticising it as excessive spending. Although he played the role of a special civil servant, it seems Musk was not an official employee of DOGE.
Democrats and federal officials have criticized DOGE since its inception, provoking investigations and layoffs at various agencies. Protests have also erupted particularly against Musk’s connection to DOGE and its initiatives.
According to DOGE, they claim to have saved approximately $214 billion through various means, which equates to a savings of $1,329.19 for each taxpayer.
The creation of DOGE was touted as a pivotal policy during Trump’s campaign aimed at streamlining government operations and curbing overspending and corruption. Musk’s involvement in Trump’s campaign, particularly in key states, underscored his advocacy for less bureaucratic constraint on businesses like his own.
After Trump’s victory in 2024, he announced Musk would lead DOGE along with Vivek Ramaswamy, although Ramaswamy eventually left the initiative to pursue another political campaign.
Trump noted that DOGE seeks to inspire significant structural reforms within the government, which he characterized as a modern approach to governance.
Continuing to highlight issues of government spending, Trump mentioned in a speech the idiocy of some findings from DOGE investigations, including funding questionable initiatives. Following Musk and DOGE’s contributions, Trump announced intentions to allocate funds to various scholarship initiatives and expressed concern about government waste.
