Gov. Shapiro encourages Fetterman to return to his Democratic roots in office

Fetterman Shatters Democratic Party’s Current Image

Senator John Fetterman from Pennsylvania recently discussed bipartisan efforts aimed at addressing Medicaid fraud. In the conversation, he voiced criticisms regarding the Democratic Party’s evolving stance on various issues, including foreign policy and moral clarity, expressing concerns about present trends.

Pennsylvania’s Democratic Governor, Josh Shapiro, has expressed dissatisfaction with Fetterman, urging him to “focus on what he was elected to do” as a representative of the Democratic Party. During a CNN appearance this week, Shapiro, who is also mentioned as a potential candidate for the 2028 Democratic presidential race, seemed quite frustrated, especially amid rumors pressuring Fetterman to step away from the party.

In the interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper, Shapiro remarked, “I can’t say what Sen. Fetterman will decide.” He emphasized that residents of Pennsylvania voted for a Democratic representation in the Senate, suggesting Fetterman must align with that expectation by serving Pennsylvania and returning to his mission of representing the people’s interests.

Fetterman has faced increasing scrutiny from both Shapiro and other party leaders due to his unexpected alignment with certain policies of former President Donald Trump. He is among a few Democratic senators representing states that Trump won in 2024. Notably, Fetterman was the sole Democrat to support advancing Trump’s nominee for the Department of Homeland Security and chose to vote with Republicans during last year’s government shutdown, citing a priority on “country over party.”

His 2025 voting record shows he sided with Republicans about 26% of the time, which has led to discontent among fellow Democrats, including Shapiro. In a recent podcast, Shapiro, while maintaining he had “no opinion on John,” stated, “There are questions that he needs to address for the people of Pennsylvania.” He continued, alluding to the concerns regarding Fetterman’s actions.

Shapiro, when asked if he would support Fetterman should he aim for re-election in 2028, remained uncertain, indicating that it was up to Fetterman to decide on his future political plans before Shapiro could consider his support.

Other prominent Democrats have also criticized Fetterman. For instance, the Democratic National Committee Vice Chairman, Malcolm Kenyatta, denounced him in April, branding his behavior as a “mess.” Kenyatta suggested that Fetterman had been disparaging his own constituents for opposing certain administration actions. Similarly, Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries pointed out that Fetterman should know better in relation to his stance on the Iranian conflict.

Interestingly, recent reports have indicated that some Republicans have attempted to persuade Fetterman to shift his party affiliation, a claim that adds another layer to the ongoing political dynamics surrounding him. However, Fetterman remains steadfast, insisting, “I am a Democrat and will stay a Democrat.”

As this situation develops, the political landscape in Pennsylvania continues to shift, leaving many wondering about Fetterman’s next steps.
