Derek Minor Supports AI Christian Music Artist Despite Forrest Frank's Worries

Christian hip-hop artist Derek Miner recently addressed concerns from fellow artist Forrest Frank regarding an AI-generated musician named Solomon Ray, who recently topped the iTunes Christian album chart.

In response, Miner took to social media, emphasizing that the Holy Spirit doesn’t inhabit AI-created music. He pointed out that many beloved Christian songs are, in fact, composed by non-Christians—individuals whose contributions include playing instruments on Christian tracks.

Miner posed a thought-provoking question: “What if an atheist created a loop similar to one that was enhanced for a Christian song?” He further queried whether an AI user could be a Christian who wants to glorify God, even if they’re not notably skilled artists or writers.

He clarified his views in the comments, indicating that he wasn’t endorsing AI music crafted without artists’ knowledge and lamenting bad music that lacks artistic merit. “I’m not saying I don’t like Forrest Frank,” he added, trying to make his position clear.

Frank’s initial worries arose when AI artist Solomon Ray climbed the Christian music charts. He reflected on this, asking, “Is this what we want?” and expressed discomfort mentioning that AI lacks any connection to the Holy Spirit, suggesting it’s strange to get spiritually involved with something devoid of that essence.

Other artists, like Phil Wickham, have echoed similar concerns, stating it’s hard to envision AI becoming a genuinely beneficial element in music. They believe it should serve merely as a tool for human creativity, rather than replace it.

Colton Dixon shared a more nuanced perspective, acknowledging AI could streamline a lengthy creative process but cautioned against using it for inspiration over the Holy Spirit.

Defending his creation, Christopher “Topher” Townsend, the person behind Solomon Ray, argued that his work expresses his creativity. He noted that listeners might struggle to discern whether music’s emotional resonance is “real or fake,” and questioned who could truly know how God might use art to communicate with people.

Currently, Solomon Ray ranks first and fifth on the Gospel Digital Song Sales Chart with his singles “Find Your Rest” and “Goodbye Temptation.”
