Gotham FC celebrates its first victory parade in NYC after winning the national championship

Gotham FC Celebrates Championship Victory with Parade

On Monday, a vibrant parade took over Lower Manhattan as thousands of soccer enthusiasts came out to celebrate Gotham FC’s women’s team for their national championship win.

Fans filled Broadway, their cheers echoing through the streets while a group of drummers kicked off the festivities, leading the triumphant team down the boulevard.

The players, adorned with their gold medals, greeted their supporters from the top of a double-decker bus, proudly displaying the championship trophy and sharing it with fans, which brought immense joy to those gathered.

When they arrived at City Hall, the atmosphere was electric—confetti filled the air as the players stepped onto a stage adorned in blue and black. Mayor Eric Adams welcomed them, presenting each athlete with a key to the city.

During the celebration, Adams praised the team, saying, “You have protected New Yorkers and embodied resilience and determination.” He noted the significant impact they’ve had on aspiring soccer players, urging them to embody the spirit of their motto: “Always Building, Never Finishing.”

Gotham FC clinched the NWSL Championship just two days prior, defeating the Washington Spirit with a thrilling last-minute goal that sent the crowd into a frenzy.

This championship marks the team’s second title in three years, following their victory over the Seattle Reign in 2023. Interestingly, the team was unable to host a public celebration after their last win, leading some fans to feel disappointed. This year, however, City Hall stepped in to ensure the community could share in the triumph.

Team captain Mandy Freeman expressed heartfelt gratitude to the fans, emphasizing their unwavering support played a critical role in the team’s success. “This championship win wasn’t just for us up here, it was for all of you,” she declared, acknowledging the loyalty of fans through both rough and celebratory times.

Forward/midfielder Jadyn Shaw echoed this sentiment with enthusiasm, referencing a phrase from a midseason interview that became the team’s rallying cry: “Underdog, ass! Thank you, New York!”

Coach Juan Carlos Amoros shared his ambitions for the future, expressing hope that this celebration is just the beginning. “We want to be world champions in January,” he asserted, indicating that the drive for success continues beyond this victory.
