Browns icon Bernie Kosar leaves the hospital following his liver transplant

Bernie Kosar Calls Himself a “Walking Miracle” Post-Transplant

On Monday, Bernie Kosar referred to his situation as a “walking miracle” after he was released from University Hospital—just a week following a successful liver transplant. Coincidentally, this happened a day before his 62nd birthday.

During a press conference, Kosar expressed surprise, saying, “I never expected to be here on my 62nd birthday.” He added, “I never thought I would be healthy, let alone get out of here.”

He went on to emphasize, “I feel like a walking miracle.” Kosar will be part of a regular follow-up program, which includes weekly blood tests, as stated by Dr. Zoe Lewis, who performed the transplant.

Back in July 2024, Kosar revealed to Cleveland Magazine that he was experiencing liver failure and needed a transplant. He was placed on the transplant list in the spring of that year.

The liver he received during the transplant on November 17 came from 21-year-old Bry Dunlap, who had passed away the previous day due to complications from anoxic brain injury. Dunlap’s family, fans of the Browns, opted to donate the organ directly after confirming it was a match for Kosar.

Expressing their support, Dunlap’s family commented, “We are very happy that Bernie will be released and can continue his recovery in comfort.” They reflected on Bry’s character, stating, “We truly believe that Bryce was down to earth and very proud to have helped a Browns legend.”

Overwhelmed with emotion when local media shared the story, Kosar said, “First of all, I’m trying not to cry. I love him.” He went on to describe a profound connection, saying, “There’s more than me in me right now. There’s no doubt about it.”

Earlier this month, Kosar had publicly asked for prayers after undergoing two “aggressive procedures” to address internal bleeding issues.

Kosar has been a beloved figure in Cleveland history, leading the Browns to three AFC title games in the late 1980s and winning his Super Bowl with the Cowboys in 1993.
