Trump's 87% backing from Republicans exceeds that of all 21st-century presidents.

Donald Trump maintains significant backing from Republican voters, with a consistent 87% of them supporting him, according to data from CNN.

This level of support placeshim ahead of other recent presidents within their party during their second terms, outstripping George W. Bush and Barack Obama, both of whom garnered 78% support from their own party bases during similar timeframes.

Harry Enten, CNN’s lead data analyst, likened Trump’s presidency to a “rock-like” stability. He pointed out that Trump has managed to hold on to his support from Republicans over the past six months, emphasizing that his backing within the GOP remains strong despite fluctuating political contexts elsewhere.

During the same CNN report, Enten highlighted Trump’s unique dominance in the Republican primary landscape. He noted that in 2020, candidates aligned with Trump won Republican primaries for congressional and gubernatorial races an impressive 98% of the time. This trend has persisted with success rates of 95% in 2022 and 96% in 2024. “Facing Donald Trump is like taking on a buzzsaw,” Enten remarked.

This strong support backdrop poses a challenging environment for Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), who recently stated that she plans to resign from Congress in January. Forecasts indicate a 31% chance that Greene will switch from the Republican Party by 2027. CNN’s Harry Enten noted that such resignations may contribute to feelings of disenchantment with both political parties, asserting that “running against Donald Trump in a Republican primary nearly always ends in loss.”

Trump’s approval rating among Republicans saw an uptick in July and August. Despite renewed discussions surrounding the Epstein case making rounds on social media, polls from CNN and Quinnipiac show approval at 88% and 90%, respectively. Interestingly, during this online frenzy, only one Republican mentioned Epstein as the nation’s primary concern. Conversely, an Associated Press (AP) poll indicated that Trump’s overall job approval rating reached a new high of 45% after his decision to send the National Guard to address violent crime in Washington, D.C.
