Missing High School Football Coach Sparks Concerns

A high school football coach vanished during an undefeated season, raising alarm within the community. Days prior to his disappearance, Travis Turner, the head coach at Union High School in Big Stone Gap, Virginia, displayed a positive demeanor in an interview. He expressed confidence about an upcoming playoff game against a rival team.

In the interview with Union Sports Network on November 15, just five days before he was reported missing, the 46-year-old coach commented, “It’s going to be a fight here…and our kids are ready.” He went on to praise the opposing team’s abilities, saying, “They’re strong up front and well-coached.”

There were no indications in the interview that he was facing any issues that could have led to his sudden disappearance. The situation took a strange turn after police visited his home for an unspecified investigation not long before he went missing.

His wife, Leslie Caudill Turner, shared several supportive posts on Facebook in the days leading to the game, but these did not hint at any troubles ahead.

As the weekend progressed, Turner was officially registered as a missing person in the Virginia State Police database. Authorities were actively searching for him by Tuesday.

The unusual circumstances began last Thursday when police reported that Turner had disappeared while on his way home in Appalachia as part of an ongoing inquiry. Details of this investigation remain unclear.

Authorities indicated, “This is part of an investigation, not an arrest,” and mentioned that during the investigation, they were informed that Turner was no longer at the scene.

In a now-deleted Facebook message, Leslie posted on Friday that her husband was missing, stating, “We love him and we need him here with us. Please continue to pray that he comes home.”

The mystery deepened when officials from Wise County Public Schools, the district governing Union High School, announced that some employees had been placed on administrative leave. It’s unclear if this is connected to Turner’s situation.

The district emphasized that this administrative action is standard and doesn’t imply any wrongdoing, adding that the situation involves ongoing law enforcement work and, therefore, they cannot disclose further details.

In an update on Monday, state police confirmed that search crews were still focused on the area around Turner’s home. “Virginia State Police is utilizing various resources, including search and rescue teams, drones, and K9s, in hopes of finding Mr. Turner safely,” a spokesperson shared. As of now, he has still not been located, and the investigation is ongoing.
