Kai Trump’s LPGA Debut: A Learning Experience
Kai Trump’s first outing in the LPGA didn’t quite go as she had hoped. The 18-year-old high school senior started with a round of 83 at the Annika tournament held at Pelican Golf Club in Bellaire, Florida, placing last among 108 contestants. However, she showed resilience by improving her score to a 75 on the following day, though it wasn’t sufficient for qualification.
Despite the challenges, it was a valuable experience for Trump, who is set to join the University of Miami’s golf team next year.
Bryson DeChambeau, who shared a moment with Trump’s grandfather at the Ryder Cup, voiced his admiration for her performance. He mentioned, “Her second-round score of five over is impressive. We weren’t sure what to expect, but she maintained her composure, and it was a fantastic opportunity for her.” He noted a conversation he had with Anika Sorenstam, the tournament host, who remarked on the competitive nature of the event and underscored the importance of the experience for the participants.
DeChambeau continued to praise Trump, stating, “It’s always exciting to see her compete against top players. She has so much potential, and it’s clear she works hard.” After her second round, Trump expressed feeling calmer than on the first day, which likely contributed to her improved play.
“I was definitely very nervous the first day, and I think that affected me,” she reflected. “But today, I felt calm and focused, which helped my performance. I prepared well for this tournament, and while nerves are part of it, they should ease with good preparation.”
This foray onto the LPGA stage is just the beginning for Trump, as she embraces her journey in competitive golf.
