How Travis Turner, a coach involved in a child porn investigation, transformed from a football legacy to a wanted criminal

Travis Turner, a well-regarded football coach who has won “Coach of the Year” twice, was set to lead his undefeated national team in a critical playoff match this Saturday.

Now, he’s at the center of a desperate manhunt, facing charges related to child pornography and minor solicitation.

This shocking turn of events has disrupted the life of the 46-year-old father of three, who left his home in rural Appalachia, Virginia, last week just as police arrived to discuss serious accusations against him.

For over ten years, Turner has coached at Union High School in Big Stone Gap, a close-knit community that’s intensely passionate about football, practically embodying that “Friday Night Lights” spirit. The town has even seen some players make it to the NFL.

Joining the coaching staff in 2011, he led his team to multiple victories, building a reputation as an inspiring and calm leader.

In a 2021 profile, he was described as showing “laser-like focus” and possessing an unwavering demeanor in a community where football is a cornerstone.

Turner grew up steeped in sports; his father, Tom, was also a local football star and later an accomplished coach in the same area.

As a player, Turner had his share of success, serving as quarterback on his father’s team starting in 1994 before continuing his athletic career at three universities in the South.

“Coaching runs in the family,” the Courier noted, pointing out his earlier recognition as “Coach of the Year” for softball back in 2006.

However, everything fell apart for him last Thursday night when police, who were initially there for a discussion—not an arrest—found him missing when they came to his home.

Since that moment, he hasn’t been seen, prompting investigators to employ various resources, including drones and K-9 units, to locate him.

Virginia State Police revealed this Tuesday that a warrant has been issued for Turner’s arrest on five counts involving child pornography and five counts of solicitation to a minor. They also indicated that more charges could follow, classifying him as a fugitive.

In the meantime, Union High School, which has around 600 students, has chosen to remain quiet on the situation, only confirming that one employee has been placed on administrative leave.

“One employee has been put on paid administrative leave while an external agency investigates allegations reported to the department,” the district stated, providing no further details.

Neither school officials nor police clarified whether this involved Turner or additional allegations related to others.

Leslie Turner, his wife of 25 years, took to social media to staunchly deny the charges, stating, “None of that is true.”

She emphasized her desire to see him return home, insisting that he is a good father and husband. Leslie shared a Facebook post showcasing their family’s life, painting a picture of a typical American family.

On Friday, she posted—and quickly deleted—a message stating, “As of 10:25 PM Friday night, Travis is missing. That’s all we know.”

The Union Bears, boasting a 12-0 record this season, are set to play in the regional finals on Saturday, with hopes of making it to the state semifinals on December 6.

Only five days before his disappearance, Turner seemed upbeat, discussing the preparations for the challenging games ahead.

“It’s going to be a battle here…and our kids are ready,” he stated to the Union Sports Network on November 15.

The community is abuzz with the startling news, as many have personal ties to Turner, seeing him both as a coach and a community figure.

“What happened has really shaken us,” remarked one former student, expressing feelings of betrayal regarding someone once seen as a mentor.

There have been whispers on social media that allegations might have circulated long before this incident, hinting at involvement from “other people”.

It remains unclear how many potential victims are connected to the allegations involving Turner.

Meanwhile, assistant coach Jay Edwards has taken over coaching responsibilities amid the investigation.

Turner had often praised his assistant coaches and the younger players, acknowledging their collective effort in building the football program stronger after a recent merger with another school.

He had expressed gratitude for community support, stating, “When you drive through Big Stone Gap or Appalachia, you see flags and banners. People really support our school’s sports programs, and the kids want to represent their school in a positive way.”
