Andrea Thompson Declared “World’s Strongest Woman” Amid Controversy
Andrea Thompson has been named the “World’s Strongest Woman” following a contentious competition that brought attention to transgender issues. Originally, Jamie Booker had claimed the title, but suspicions arose regarding Booker’s birth gender. This was amplified by a video on YouTube where Booker identified as “transgender.”
After stepping down from the podium, Thompson expressed her disbelief at the situation, calling Booker’s win “bullish.” She took to social media to celebrate her victory, although she mentioned it was perhaps the “most exhausting experience” she’s encountered in her career.
“What should have been a momentous occasion was sadly overshadowed by scandal and misconduct,” Thompson noted, highlighting how the sport should uplift women without judgment. She added that her frustration stemmed not just from the inability to celebrate her win but for other athletes who also deserved their moment in the spotlight.
Thompson felt gratitude toward the team for their swift action regarding the situation, noting that it was unprecedented in their sport to correct such a matter quickly. She expressed cautious optimism that this kind of issue could be avoided in the future.
In her remarks, she encouraged women to participate fully in the sport, asserting that they should stand proud and show younger generations their capabilities. Additionally, she urged for an end to the backlash against female competitors, simply for being women.
According to sources, Jamie Booker had no prior experience in women’s strongman events until June of this year, and it’s still unclear if Booker competed before that as a man. Following the allegations, Strongman announced Booker’s disqualification from the competition, admitting ignorance of the circumstances surrounding Booker’s participation.
The organization made it clear that had they known about Booker’s birth gender, participation in the women’s category would not have occurred. They emphasized the importance of fair competition, with categories based on biological sex at birth, while still welcoming athletes of all backgrounds.
Attempts to reach Booker have so far gone unanswered, as their social media accounts have been made private. Furthermore, the Texas attorney general’s office is reportedly looking into the matter.
