Investigation of Virginia Educator and Brother for Alleged Attack Plans on ICE

Officials from the Department of Homeland Security have confirmed that they are investigating a case involving a Virginia educator and his brother. The two are accused of plotting an attack against ICE, potentially using explosives.

Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin reported that John Wilson Bennett, the principal at Kempsville High School, and his brother Mark Booth Bennett were apprehended at a Vietnamese restaurant in Virginia Beach. They were allegedly planning to travel to Nevada to carry out these attacks in response to civilian casualties reported during recent immigration operations.

“It’s shocking to think that someone in education would contemplate an ambush against ICE agents, especially considering the specifics mentioned about acquiring high-caliber weapons capable of penetrating bulletproof vests,” McLaughlin expressed, noting that the arrests were first covered by FOX News Digital.

She added, “Thanks to Homeland Security Investigations and our law enforcement partners, these individuals are now in custody.”

Accusations of Threats Against Law Enforcement

In another incident, a Florida man was arrested by the Department of Homeland Security for allegedly threatening ICE agents online.

John Bennett has been part of the Virginia Beach educational community since 2009, but he is currently on leave from his position. McLaughlin stated that the investigation followed an off-duty Norfolk police officer overhearing conversations about attacks on ICE agents at the restaurant on November 17. It was reported that Mark Bennett had intentions to connect with others in Las Vegas while planning to purchase a firearm with explosive ammunition.

Just two days later, Mark Bennett was apprehended at Norfolk International Airport as he attempted to board a flight to Las Vegas. John Bennett was also taken into custody that same day.

Increased Threats and Violence Against ICE Officers

McLaughlin revealed that this incident is part of a troubling trend, with a significant rise in assaults against ICE personnel and a dramatic increase in threats against their lives. “Our officers face daily risks to remove dangerous criminals—murderers, rapists, and terrorists—as they work to protect the community,” she pointed out.

Mark Bennett’s attorney, Happy O’Brien, contested the portrayal of the case and claimed that his client was in Nevada for a Formula One event with his child. He also likened the discussions at the restaurant to comedic conversations in the sitcom “Seinfeld.”

Both John and Mark Bennett are facing charges related to conspiracy to commit malicious wounding.
