ESPN Analysts Discuss Vanderbilt Quarterback’s Mom on Air
During a recent broadcast, ESPN analyst Joey Galloway requested fellow commentator Kirk Herbstreit to reduce the frequent cutaways showing Antoinette Padilla, the mother of Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia, while covering Commodores games.
On their “Nonstop” podcast, Galloway likened the broadcast’s focus on Padilla to the way Taylor Swift is often featured at Kansas City Chiefs games, considering the constant camera attention she received during Vanderbilt’s 45-17 victory over Kentucky State.
“I wonder how this operates in the TV and gaming sectors. Is there going to be a camera fixed on her throughout the game?” Galloway posed, expressing his curiosity.
Herbstreit responded by saying it’s up to the production team and mentioned a possible cameraman stationed close to Padilla.
The frequent shots of Padilla, who was celebrating her son’s achievements, reminded Galloway of Swift’s presence at games, given her engagement to Chiefs player Travis Kelce.
“I’m not saying I’m anxious about it, just… I have some questions,” Galloway added. “Is there a cameraman dedicated solely to her? I appreciate the story and love the family—it’s heartwarming—but maybe not every single play?”
Herbstreit mentioned he wasn’t sure about the cameraman for the upcoming Vanderbilt-Tennessee game and suggested that Galloway could communicate his request to the crew.
Padilla had made headlines when she was seen in the stands during what was Pavia’s Senior Day at FirstBank Stadium, where he remarkably rushed for 484 yards and scored five touchdowns.
A video of her dancing in a “Pavia for Heisman” shirt even went viral online, showcasing her enthusiastic support. Earlier this season, she had also gained attention after comedian Theo Fung humorously tried to engage with her while she cheered at a game against South Carolina.
As of now, Vanderbilt holds a record of 9-2 overall and 5-2 in SEC play, gearing up for their rivalry match against Tennessee.
