Patriots Lose Key Offensive Player to Injury
The New England Patriots just faced a tough blow as they head into the final stretch of the season. Coach Mike Vrabel revealed on Wednesday that star left tackle Will Campbell, the fourth overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, has been placed on injured reserve due to a knee issue. This 21-year-old was injured during the third quarter of the team’s recent 26-20 victory against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Campbell is expected to be eligible to return for the Week 18 matchup against the Miami Dolphins. In the meantime, Vederian Lowe is slated to take his place on the offensive line.
The Patriots have been having a solid season so far, with a 10-2 record and riding a nine-game winning streak, putting them at the top of the AFC East. They are set to face the Buffalo Bills next, who are positioned second in the division with a 7-4 record; unfortunately, Campbell won’t be available for that game.
A significant factor in the Patriots’ impressive turnaround from last season’s 4-13 record has been their revamped offensive line. The Week 1 lineup from 2024 featured Chukunuma Okorafor at left tackle, Michael Jordan at left guard, David Andrews as center, Rayden Robinson at right guard, and Michael Onwenu at right tackle.
In the offseason, the team made some key additions to their offensive line via both the NFL Draft and free agency. This year, Campbell was positioned at left tackle in a lineup that included Jared Wilson at left guard, Garrett Bradberry at center, Onwenu at right guard, and Morgan Moses at right tackle.
The improved offensive line has been crucial for quarterback Drake Maye’s success—he’s emerged as a strong MVP candidate this season. He leads the NFL with a 71% completion rate, accumulating 3,130 passing yards, 21 touchdowns, and only six interceptions through 12 games. Much of his success can be attributed to the enhanced protection from the line.
However, Maye may not only be without Campbell but also left guard Wilson, who missed the Bengals game due to his own injury. It’s unclear if Wilson will be ready for the Patriots’ upcoming game against the New York Giants, who hold a 2-10 record.
