Rangers Find Gratitude Amid Season Challenges

RALEIGH, N.C. — As Thanksgiving approaches, the Rangers can be grateful for their slightly above .500 record.

Following a 4-2 victory against the Hurricanes, who are currently leading the Eastern Conference, the Blueshirts have matched their benchmark for November 27. With a record of 12 wins, 11 losses, and 2 ties, they sit in a rather average spot about 30 percent into the season.

This win is somewhat commendable, especially considering that Carolina has been grappling with injuries.

With 25 games left before the end of the 2025-26 season, the Rangers are fortunate not to be positioned lower in the NHL standings than they are at present.

The journey to this point has been a turbulent one—marked by inconsistencies, struggles at Madison Square Garden, and a significant number of injuries that have likely contributed to their performance issues.

But on Wednesday night in the Lenovo Center, the Rangers managed to navigate through the well-oiled machine that is the Hurricanes, pulling themselves back into a promising stance rather than teetering on the edge.

Artemi Panarin’s two goals were crucial, even though the Rangers faced their third regulation loss of the season against this same team at home. There were moments when they felt overwhelmed, but timely goals and an impressive 35 saves from goalkeeper Igor Shesterkin made a difference.

Remarkably, the Rangers turned their fortunes around after a shaky first 20 minutes, ending that period with a 1-0 lead.

Despite being limited to just four shots on goal in the first period, the Rangers managed to score on their second shot at 16:53, thanks to Noah Laba. From the right faceoff circle, he found the net, ending a nine-game drought without a goal.

In the second period, though, the Rangers had difficulty breaking through Carolina’s defenses. They received three consecutive penalties, which threw off their momentum during five-on-five play.

The Hurricanes responded with a one-timer from Shayne Gostisbehere on the power play, tying the game at one about five minutes into the second period.

Near the end of that period, Panarin struck again with a one-timer off the goalie’s pads to regain the lead for his team.

The Rangers then extended their lead to 3-1 just 45 seconds into the third period, courtesy of Vincent Trocheck’s shot from near the circles.

Seth Jarvis brought the Hurricanes back within a point, scoring his 12th goal of the season and cutting the Rangers’ lead as the clock dipped below eleven minutes in regulation.
