New details have emerged regarding Pete Carroll’s decision to dismiss Chip Kelly as the Raiders’ offensive coordinator.
The Raiders took action earlier this week. Carroll mentioned to reporters that he had given Kelly “a lot of leeway” during his brief stint as play-caller in Las Vegas. However, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero added on Wednesday that there was more to the story.
Officials from the NFL, appearing on “The Rich Eisen Show,” indicated that Kelly made several errors in his play-calling decisions.
“I heard there were instances where Chip Kelly consistently made poor play calls,” Pelissero stated. “For instance, he was supposed to position the play motion so the receiver was on the left but forgot to specify that, leading Geno Smith to the line and saying, ‘This isn’t right.'” Pelissero also noted that there were times when Kelly called plays not in the game plan or inadequately prepared.
This new information sheds light on Carroll’s comments regarding his decision.
“I gave Chip a lot of leeway because of his impressive track record and a strong season last year out of Ohio State,” Carroll explained on Monday. “As we kept growing together, we just didn’t reach our potential. I genuinely wish him well. I like him and we got along well, but ultimately, we had to make a tough choice.”
Kelly’s time with the Raiders ended after just 11 games, with a current record of 2-9. Their latest defeat came against the Browns, where Shedule Sanders made his NFL debut as a starter.
