Unexpected Thanksgiving Bond
Sometimes, the most meaningful connections arise from unexpected moments. For one duo in Arizona, a simple mistake led to a decade of Thanksgiving celebrations together, marking their tenth year this season.
Back in 2016, Wanda Dench intended to text her grandchildren about Thanksgiving plans but accidentally reached out to Jamal Hinton in Phoenix instead. When she sent a photo confirming her identity, Hinton quickly pointed out the error, humorously noting, “You’re not my grandmother,” followed by a laughing emoji.
Despite the mix-up, Dench invited Hinton to join her for dinner, and the story catapulted into a viral sensation, capturing the hearts of many.
Dench and Hinton reflected on their journey in a conversation, sharing how that accidental invitation blossomed into a lasting friendship. “I remember that day vividly—it was thrilling and completely out of the blue,” Dench recalled. “Meeting Jamal turned out to be one of the best things that ever happened to me.” Hinton mentioned the impact of their meeting, noting it changed his life. He humorously added that he became quite popular after that year.
Even as life took them in different directions—Hinton moving to Florida and Dench facing personal challenges, including the loss of her husband and a breast cancer diagnosis—their bond grew stronger. This year holds particular significance for Dench, as she now celebrates being cancer-free.
Dench shared her initial surprise at her diagnosis, stating it wasn’t common in her family, and she thought she’d escaped it at her age. “I didn’t think I was at risk, to be honest,” she mentioned. Although she hesitated to share her diagnosis, the encouragement from friends and family motivated her to raise awareness, especially among women of her age. “We still have life ahead of us, even if it doesn’t feel that way sometimes,” she expressed.
Dench decided to inform Hinton about her health in October, coinciding with Breast Cancer Awareness Month. “It’s a good time to discuss this,” he encouraged her, to which she lightheartedly remarked that she hadn’t even realized the occasion marked the month.
Overall, Dench has appreciated the support she received while sharing her story. “It’s been heartwarming,” she said, emphasizing the feedback from women who were inspired to get checked. Hinton also chimed in, expressing his fondness for their ongoing feel-good story that resonates each year.
This Thanksgiving, Hinton will be at the helm, partnering with Green Giant for special celebrations, marking the company’s 100th anniversary. Dench quipped about their menu choices, noting, “There’s nothing here I wouldn’t enjoy.”
