This holiday season, certain toys are putting quite a dent in shoppers’ pockets—though not in a good way.
American Girl recently launched two limited edition dolls from their “hue” Collector Series: the stunning Glinda and the rather unusual Elphaba. They made their debut on September 22, just ahead of the highly anticipated sequel “Wicked: For Good,” set to hit theaters November 21.
But, wow—did they disappear fast! Both dolls quickly vanished from store shelves, showed up on American Girl’s website, and desperate fans are now flocking to resale sites. Elphaba’s price tags have shot up to extraordinary heights. Some listings are going for an eye-popping $999.
While children might be the intended audience, it seems adults are the ones benefitting as they showcase their prized collectibles on TikTok. It’s kind of amusing—sometimes even a bit ridiculous—how grown-ups flaunt their finds.
Take for instance TikTok user @katnisseverslay, who spun the Glinda doll in a recent video, exclaiming, “My $300 is amazing.” Meanwhile, @carladistefano30 humorously shared her obsessive routine of moving Elphaba around, capturing her thoughts on spending that much on a green doll.
Reactions in the comments ranged from jaw-dropping to bemusement. “She’s sold out, so it seems you’ve got a genuine collector’s piece,” one commenter noted, while another joked about their own outrageous spending habits.
It’s kind of wild to think that in 2025, it’s actually young adults, not kids, battling for the season’s hottest toys. It makes you wonder: why do grown-ups treat toys like financial investments? Perhaps it’s the nostalgia factor.
American Girl produced 6,800 Glinda dolls, which can fetch up to $2,000 on resale platforms. As for Elphaba, only 6,000 were made, and their unique features have sent collectors into a frenzy.
User @deirdre_treacy recently posted an unboxing video featuring a Glinda doll, expressing, “This is your sign to buy an American Girl doll and relive your childhood.”
Originally priced at $295, Elphaba boasts a striking dress and accessories that are just brimming with character. She’s inspired by Broadway star Cynthia Erivo and even features microbladed details.
Glinda, also priced at $295, appears in a dazzling ballgown, designed to resemble Ariana Grande’s character. There are only 6,800 of her dolls as well.
Both dolls come with basic underwear, flexible limbs, and a cotton body, along with a numbered certificate. Because, you know, even magic needs proof of purchase.
Even their sleepwear is turning heads—and wallets. The limited edition pajama sets, initially priced at $80, have gone sky-high on resale sites. Elphaba’s pajamas are deep purple to match her skin, while Glinda’s are, of course, bubblegum pink.
These sleepover outfits are fetching prices that make Broadway tickets look cheap. The prices on eBay are astonishing, sometimes topping $295 or even more.
Collectors are genuinely excited to share their finds, with one person admitting, “I took Glinda everywhere.” Another added with a dramatic flair, “It broke my heart. I know $800 is ridiculous, but I can’t help myself.”
Of course, price shock is everywhere. One commenting user pointedly said, “It’s cute, but not $300 cute,” while another questioned the logic behind such an extravagant purchase when basic needs are a struggle.
Ultimately, while these dolls may not possess actual magic, they certainly know how to enchant one’s finances. And in 2025, the hottest accessory isn’t a wand… it’s disposable income.
