Property Dispute Involving Katy Perry and Disabled Veteran
Pop star Katy Perry is taking legal action against an 85-year-old military veteran, Carl Westcott, over an ongoing property dispute in Montecito, California.
This situation began back in 2020, when Perry and her then-partner, actor Orlando Bloom, acquired Westcott’s eight-bedroom property located in a neighborhood known for its celebrity residents.
The couple had reached out to Westcott with a heartfelt note, expressing their hope that he would accept their offer as they were expecting a baby soon. They believed that the home would be ideal for raising their child.
However, shortly after the sale, Westcott, 86, attempted to rescind the agreement, claiming he wasn’t in a proper mental state to comprehend the transaction due to painkillers following back surgery.
A judge concluded in 2023 that Westcott did not convincingly demonstrate that he was incapable of agreeing to the sale due to his medical issues. Additionally, Perry’s attorney suggested that Westcott might have received a competing offer from Maria Shriver, the ex-wife of Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Perry then countersued for $3.25 million, citing losses from not being able to rent the property during the legal proceedings, along with $2.2 million for necessary repairs and $3 million in legal expenses.
As of now, Westcott is bedridden due to Huntington’s disease, which has severely impacted his cognitive functions. He requires 24-hour hospice care, and his son, Cort Westcott, asserts that the legal battle has taken a significant toll on his father’s wellbeing.
Abeshi Manyando, a public relations strategist, commented on the situation, saying, “It’s outrageous for a wealthy pop star to seek a large sum from someone who is seriously ill. This has evolved into a David and Goliath scenario—an influential celebrity against an ailing veteran who has already faced tremendous loss.” This perspective certainly brings an emotional weight to the ongoing dispute.
